Danny! Good to see you here. Thank you for this - the areas of autism, Jewish identity, and Israel play big and generally quite confused and conflicted parts in my life, and some of what you've written helps with that.

And: my mother's mother was Yochevet Kupferschmied...! She came from Poland and survived the camps, possibly the only one of her close family to do so. But this is almost all I know about her, her story was hidden under a blanket of shame and pain

Have you come across many other Kupferschmieds? This is the first time for me.

The synchronicity of both our mothers' mothers' being Kupferschmieds carries some significance for me, given the mystery around my own grandmother, and the total lack of knowledge around her and her family. So I'm wondering whether meeting another one is a common and fairly meaningless occurrence for you - so somehow you might be a portal to a whole ocean of Kupfershmieds...

I haven’t no - it means Coppersmith, so a few grades down from the fancy Goldsmiths, of course, but I’m guessing it’s pretty generic.

Yes, my other grandmother was a Goldschmidt - and my mother ended up an actual silversmith, so hence perhaps some of the extra meaning in it for me. I do feel like there are a lot more names with Gold in though, and Kupferschmidt not so common. Anyway, time to get back to channeling all these precious metals through my life (not been so succesful at it so far...)
